Hyper Feminine, America Online Themed Website About Pop Culture

America Online themed website

It's Independence Day in America which feels like a good time to feature America's Decline.

The vibe is like...

Katy Perry Shrine

You're out shopping in the early 2000s and coming up to the checkout, you pass those stands of magazines with Britney Spears and Katy Perry on the front cover.

America's Decline

She tells you immediately it's a "queer" and "feminist" site but as you're browsing around, the first impression doesn't match the stereotype. Mostly you're being bombarded by visual nostalgia, graphic design, and varied magazine and AOL inspired layouts on every page.

It's refreshing because you can tell the creator lived through the time period rather than just imagining what it was like. It's a celebration of pop music, 90s magazines, and the type of things a stereotypical girl would like:

It's only after you've looked around a bit that you notice some sections are slightly gay, albeit from the female gaze I suspect. And the men shown here are as masculine as the women of the site are feminine. And that's when it hits you, that you're looking at a glimpse of gay culture from that time period. It was different. Whether or not you want to look at it is up to you. These sections are clearly labeled.

After you've visually consumed the site, her writing about pop music is where I recommend you to land for a closer look. Unless you like looking at pretty women (or men), then you could spend some extra time doing that.
